In the case of Phoebe Prince she had recently moved to South Hadley from Ireland, and was bullied by several of her fellow students via her Facebook page. Social networking has made it easy for old friends, and geographically separated family members to reconnect and stay in touch, but it has opened up a whole new vector for bullies to torment their victims. Bullying is not a new problem for our children, but the way it is done is changing. Until recent years bullying was normally confined to school and neighborhood conflicts. Before the Internet when you were being bullied you know who was doing it, because it was happening face to face. The anonymity provided by the Internet prevents identification of the bully. The home was often a safe place for bullied children in the past, but with cyber bullying the victim may feel even more surrounded. Pornography has been a driving force on the Internet so it is no surprise that more than one-third of sixteen and seventeen year old boys admit to intentionally viewing pornographic sites, according to an article titled 42 percent of kids, Teens View Porn Online from Newsmax.com in 2007. Internet Dangers Essay
Internet Dangers The Internet is a form of communication that is open to the world. Anyone can use it for any number of tasks from research to entertainment. Companies, large and small, use it to advertise and sell products. Individuals hold auctions with the largest market in the world. Anyone who wants to can be seen and heard on the Internet. This open form of rapid interaction has spawned the term global village. However, like a village, everyone is not the same. In fact, different people have different agendas. This is also true on the Internet. People use it for gathering information, others for communication, and some for profit. However, there are all kinds of people, and some of them can even wish to do harm. These people who intend harm can do so in a great variety of ways. It¡¦s like the terrible acts that are committed in the streets every day. A person can be walking down the street and be mugged. That person could also be injured, kidnapped, raped, or murdered. These same acts can be committed on the Internet in different ways. Some of the displeasing acts that take place on the Internet are viruses, piracy, and fraud.
Viruses are foreign executables that infect and corrupt or leak information. Some of the different types are boot sector viruses, file viruses, multipartite viruses, parasitic viruses, companion viruses, polymorphic viruses, macro viruses, and hoax viruses. They are categorized by how they move around in a system or by what they target.. For example, boot sector viruses are run during a boot sequence where they attack and cause all sorts of havoc. They can prevent a system from loading, make modifications to files, or a more simple form of a rider that will attack boot files thus crippling the system or crashing it by terminating processor functions (InoculateIT 3). The point is that viruses are as diverse and varied on a computer as they are in the biological world.
The reason that there are so many categories of viruses is that they can perform many functions. They can steal information, corrupt sensitive files, or even send other viruses. The Trojan Horse virus is a new virus form that took the Internet by storm last year. This type of virus, also known as a Trojan or a horse, performs one of two functions. The least common but most obvious is to let someone sneak into or gain access to a system. This type of access is less favored because of the time that is required to access each system. The second function is one of the biggest problems on the Internet currently. It¡¦s the infamous password/cookie Trojan. This virus waits until someone comes across a form on your computer with the word password on it. It then does one of two things. It either sends this password off to whoever wants to see it over the Internet or it simply tucks the...
